Jakarta, Indonesia – Recently a multi-national cooperative team of researchers from top universities released a study about the positive effects of kratom and the potential uses for a number of health and recovery ailments. The Indonesian government urged cooperation across multiple continents and specifically with U.S.-based researchers and companies. Recently the support has begun to materialize in what could be a groundbreaking push for kratom across the world.

On August 8th, the KSP (Office of the President of Malaysia) applauded cooperation with the continued development of kratom across multiple entities to advance kratom including the AKA  (American Kratom Association), MIT45 (a leading U.S.-based kratom company), multiple universities, and more.

Kratom, whose species name is Mitragyna Speciosa, is a plant grown primarily in southwest Asia that has long been used for its health and pain relief benefits. Over the past decade, the popularity of this still little-known plant has soared in the U.S. and across the western world, and many people are now hearing about this for the first time as the popularity soars.

In 2019, after research from multiple universities (including Johns Hopkins, Yale, University Sains Malaysia, and multiple others) pointed to evidence of the potential benefits of the pain relief provided by Mitragyna Speciosa and was presented at the NIDA international forum, the Indonesian government requested the need for additional support and international cooperation in order to help the positive effects of kratom be further studied and gain acceptance among the medical community.

Since then, further cooperation has been slowly forthcoming. Moeldoko, the Chief of the KSP, pointed out that as of July 2021, the volume of kratom exports to the US has reached 400 tons,  And recently the Antara News reported Curtis Scott Bramble, a member of the Utah State Senate who was present at the meeting, said that kratom has become one of the important commodities in the U.S. as drugs made from the plant can help reduce pain and anxiety, thereby acting as substitutes for opium.

“Kratom is a safe natural product, but the challenge is that kratom is often contaminated with E. Coli, Salmonella, and heavy metals. So, I hope from this meeting, we will get the same understanding of kratom. I hope that there will be regulations to guarantee the safety of kratom that will be exported to the United States,” Bramble added.

Kratom has had a relatively obscure path in the western world however indicators have shown it is becoming more widespread as the import and sales volume has increased significantly over the previous few years tiptoeing toward breaking into the mainstream. The main question we will wait to see is if this cooperative push will take it to the next level as support in the United States has become widespread but still has a few state-level challenges to push through.
